Every fight broadcast pauses on the tale of the tape, and every tale of the tape has a row for reach. The commentators usually say something about it. The longer fighter "will want to keep this at range"; the shorter one "has to get inside". It is treated as a fact about the fight, like the weight class.
We wanted to know what the number is actually worth. So we took the reach and height we hold for every fighter in our roster, matched them to the career statistics ufcstats.com publishes - strikes landed and absorbed per minute, takedowns, takedown defence - and to the current rankings and records, and asked the simplest possible question: do fighters with a long reach for their division do anything differently?
They do one thing differently. They get hit less. Everything else - how much they land, how often they win, whether they are ranked, whether they hold a belt - looks exactly the same as it does for the short-armed.
Reach only makes sense inside a division
A raw reach figure is close to meaningless on its own, because it mostly tells you what weight the fighter is. The median heavyweight in our sample has a 78-inch reach; the median strawweight has 63. So for every fighter we worked out how far their reach sits from the median of their own division. Kevin Holland's 81 inches are seven over the welterweight median. Islam Makhachev's 70 are four under it. That relative number is what the rest of this piece is about.
Across the 227 active fighters with both measurements, that number correlates with win percentage at +0.01. With strikes landed per minute, +0.01. With takedowns landed, -0.05. With takedown defence, -0.09. None of those are effects. They are what you get when you correlate a stat against a shuffled deck.
The one column that moves is strikes absorbed per minute, at -0.17. Small, but it is the only real signal in the row, and it points the way you would expect: the longer the arms, the fewer clean strikes the fighter eats.
Two inches either way
Correlations are a dry way to see it. The cleaner view is to split the roster into the fighters with a real reach edge, the fighters with a real deficit, and everyone in the middle.

Medians, active fighters only. Fighters between one and two inches from their division median (10 of them) are omitted from the table but included in every correlation.
Read the absorbed column and reach is real. Fighters two or more inches longer than their division absorb 3.22 strikes a minute; fighters two or more inches shorter absorb 4.11. That is a 22% gap, and it is bigger than the gap we found last week between ranked and unranked fighters. On the defensive side of the sheet, being long is worth about as much as being good.
Now read the win column. .79, .79, .80. Read the ranked column. 62%, 73%, 63%. The long group and the short group are, in every column that describes results, the same group. The short-armed fighters get hit almost a strike a minute more often and win at exactly the same rate.
The landed column explains part of why. Long fighters do not land more. If anything the short group is a shade busier, at 4.33 a minute against 4.21. The reach edge is not being converted into offence; it is only being spent on defence. That is a real thing to have, but it is one thing, and the sport has other ways of getting it.
What the short fighters do instead
Look at the takedown defence column and the short group is the best of the three, at 73% against 68%. Their takedown average is also a touch higher. That fits a story every coach already tells: if you cannot win the distance, you close it. The shorter fighter fights in the pocket or on the mat, learns to stop takedowns because they spend more time inside where takedowns happen, and takes an extra strike a minute as the price of the ticket.
It shows in who lives at the short end. Of the fifteen fighters furthest under their division median, nine are ranked in the top ten or hold a belt. Ilia Topuria is three inches under the lightweight median and 17-1. Max Holloway is three under and has fought for a belt in two divisions. Makhachev is four under and is the welterweight champion. Kyoji Horiguchi is five under - the shortest relative reach in the whole sample - and absorbs 2.08 strikes a minute, a figure only twenty other fighters in the sample can match. None of them are being kept out of anything by their arms.
And the long end, for all its defensive numbers, has plenty of fighters who get hit anyway. Jiลรญ Prochรกzka has a four-inch edge at light heavyweight and absorbs 5.67 a minute, second only to Paulo Costa in the division. Casey O'Neill is three inches long at women's flyweight and absorbs 5.53. Dan Hooker is three long and absorbs 4.94. Reach is an option. Some fighters decline it.
The champions are not long
If reach were a quiet edge that compounded over a career, you would expect it to pile up at the top. It does not.

The remainder in each row are fighters exactly at their division median. Champions include the interim heavyweight champion.
The only places in the table where long-armed fighters outnumber short-armed ones are the bottom five spots of the rankings and the unranked group. Among the champions, it is four short to three long. The median edge at every rung is zero.
Go through the eleven names. Ciryl Gane, at three inches over the heavyweight median, is the only champion with a reach edge you would call meaningful, and he is the one who fights most like the stereotype - 2.31 absorbed a minute, second-fewest of any active heavyweight. Carlos Ulberg is an inch long. Sean Strickland is half an inch. Alexander Volkanovski, Tom Aspinall, Valentina Shevchenko and Mackenzie Dern sit dead on their division median. Kayla Harrison is an inch short. Petr Yan and Justin Gaethje are two short. Makhachev is four.
Volkanovski is worth a sentence on his own, because he is the fighter most often used to argue that reach does not matter, and the data agrees with the argument but not the example. He is five foot six at featherweight and his reach is 71 inches - exactly the division median. His famous disadvantage is height, not reach. His arms are normal; he just carries them lower.
Ape index does not rescue it
The usual rebuttal at this point is that reach on its own is the wrong number, and what matters is reach relative to height - the "ape index", the fighter whose arms are long for their frame. We checked. Reach minus height correlates with strikes absorbed at -0.15, slightly weaker than plain relative reach, and with win percentage at +0.10, which is the difference between nothing and almost nothing. Sorting the roster into quarters by ape index gives ranked shares of 82%, 59%, 70% and 54% from the least gangly quarter to the most, which is not a pattern in any direction.
Height fares no better. Height relative to division correlates with absorption at -0.05 and with win percentage at +0.01. If there is a body-shape number that predicts results in this sport, it is not one of the three on the tale of the tape.
Where it still counts
None of this means the commentators are wrong that reach shapes a fight. It shapes how the fight looks. The long fighter gets hit less, and the data puts a price on it: about 0.09 fewer strikes absorbed per minute for every inch of edge, around 2.5% of the roster average per inch. Over a three-round fight against a fighter four inches shorter, that is roughly five fewer clean strikes taken. It is a real edge and a small one.
What the data says is that five strikes over fifteen minutes does not decide fights at this level, because the fighters at this level have all found a way to pay for their build. The long ones sometimes stand in the pocket anyway and give the edge back. The short ones wrestle, or crowd, or - in Horiguchi's case - move well enough that the reach they do not have stops mattering. By the time a fighter has fifteen professional fights, their style has already absorbed their body, and the tale of the tape is describing a problem they solved years ago.
So when the broadcast lingers on the reach row, the honest translation is: the longer fighter will probably eat a few fewer punches tonight. Whether they win is a different question, and the rest of the stat sheet - the strikes absorbed number in particular, which does predict things - is where to go for the answer. Reach and height (inches) are as held in the roster behind our fight simulator, taken from official tale-of-the-tape figures. Career statistics (significant strikes landed and absorbed per minute, takedowns per 15 minutes, takedown defence) are from ufcstats.com fighter pages, matched by name; 253 fighters matched with both measurements, of which 227 are active and 26 are retired "legacy" fighters excluded from every comparison above. "Relative reach" is a fighter's reach minus the median reach of the fighters in their weight class within this roster. Rankings and win-loss records are as held on 15 September 2026, updated weekly from the official UFC rankings; "champions" are the ten undisputed champions plus the interim heavyweight champion. All correlations are Pearson coefficients on the 227 active fighters; all group figures are medians unless stated. The roster is a curated set of active and historically significant fighters, not every fighter under contract, so the percentages describe this sample rather than the promotion as a whole.
