Here is a question that sounds like it should have an obvious answer: what does a ranked UFC fighter do that an unranked one does not?
The obvious answer is "land more". So we checked. We took the career numbers ufcstats.com publishes for every fighter - strikes landed per minute, strikes absorbed per minute, takedowns, takedown defence, submission attempts - matched them to the 254 active fighters in our roster, and split the group by where they sit in the current rankings. The obvious answer turned out to be mostly wrong.
The median ranked fighter lands 4.30 significant strikes a minute. The median unranked fighter lands 4.05. That is a 6% gap - about one extra strike every four minutes. It is real, but it is small, and it is not what separates the two groups.
What separates them is the other column. The median ranked fighter absorbs 3.25 strikes a minute. The median unranked fighter absorbs 3.74. That is a 13% gap, more than double the offensive one, and it runs the same direction at every rung of the ladder.
The ladder, in two columns
Split the sample into the top five of each division, six to ten, eleven to fifteen, and everybody outside the rankings, and the pattern is hard to miss. Landed strikes wobble around. Absorbed strikes fall in a straight line.

Medians. "Differential" is strikes landed minus strikes absorbed per minute. Interim champions are counted with the ranked contenders; see the method note at the end.
Read the third column and you would struggle to tell the rungs apart. Fighters ranked eleven to fifteen land fewer strikes than the unranked group. Fighters ranked six to ten land slightly more than the top five. Volume does not climb the ladder with you.
Read the fourth column and the ladder appears. Every ranked tier absorbs between 3.17 and 3.31 strikes a minute. The unranked group absorbs 3.74. The line between "ranked" and "not ranked", in this data, is drawn at about half a strike per minute - and it is drawn on the defensive side.
The differential column simply adds the two together, and it tells the same story from the other end: a top-five fighter outlands their opponents by more than a strike a minute; an unranked fighter, by less than a third of one. Almost all of that gap is absorption.
Sort by volume and nothing happens
The cleanest way to see how little landed volume matters on its own is to ignore the rankings entirely and just sort the 254 fighters into quarters by each stat.
Sort by strikes landed per minute, from the quietest quarter to the busiest. The median win percentage of each quarter is .786, .729, .792 and .811. The share of each quarter that holds a ranking is 62%, 56%, 71% and 62%. There is a faint upward drift in win rate and no pattern at all in rankings. The busiest quarter of strikers in the UFC is ranked at exactly the same rate as the quietest.
Now sort by strikes absorbed per minute, from the least-hit quarter to the most-hit. Win percentage goes .857, .778, .773, .735. The share that is ranked goes 75%, 69%, 65%, 44%. The average loss count goes 3.6, 5.8, 5.0, 6.5.
Being in the most-hit quarter of the roster is, in this sample, the single clearest statistical marker of not being ranked. Being in the busiest quarter tells you almost nothing.
Across the 278 fighters in our full set with ten or more professional fights, strikes landed per minute correlates with win percentage at +0.07 - close enough to zero to call it noise. Strikes absorbed correlates at -0.32. Takedowns per fight, which we will come back to, correlates at +0.32. The differential lands at +0.39, the strongest single number ufcstats.com publishes.
Two ways to not get hit
It would be tidy if "gets hit less" meant "better striking defence", but the data splits into two very different populations, and it is worth pulling them apart.
Look at who actually lives in the least-hit quarter of the roster. Half of them - 49% - average two or more takedowns per fifteen minutes. In the most-hit quarter, that figure is 11%. A large share of the fighters who absorb almost nothing are absorbing almost nothing because the fight is on the floor, where significant strikes are rare and the person on top is the only one throwing them. Islam Makhachev absorbs 1.42 a minute and lands only 2.27. Pat Sabatini absorbs 1.16 and lands 1.69. Bryce Mitchell, Yaroslav Amosov, Montel Jackson - the same shape. These are not fighters who slip punches. They are fighters who remove punching from the fight.
The other population is more interesting, because it is the one people mean when they say "defensive striker". Filter the least-hit quarter down to fighters who average under one takedown a fight - people who are standing and trading, and still not getting hit - and you are left with fourteen names. Eleven of them are ranked. Their median win rate is .83. Michael Page, who absorbs 1.51 strikes a minute across a 25-3 career, is the purest example. Magomed Ankalaev, Ian Machado Garry, Ciryl Gane, Wang Cong and Natรกlia Silva are all in the same group.
Fourteen fighters is a small club. Being hit rarely while standing in front of someone is, it turns out, a genuinely unusual skill, and the rankings notice it.
The brawlers who make it anyway
None of this means high-volume, high-absorption fighters cannot succeed. It means they succeed at a lower rate and pay for it in the loss column.
Take the 36 fighters in the sample with fifteen or more professional fights who absorb more than 4.5 strikes a minute. Thirteen of them are ranked. Their average loss count is 7.1. Now take the 34 fighters with the same experience who absorb fewer than 2.5. Twenty-seven are ranked. Their average loss count is 3.7. Same career length, roughly double the losses, half the chance of a number next to your name.
The individual records tell you what that looks like from the inside. Dan Hooker absorbs 4.94 a minute and is 24-14, ranked. Angela Hill absorbs 5.0 and is 19-16. Both have been in the sport a long time. Neither has ever been in a boring fight. The numbers are the invoice.
The volume leaders are worth a glance too, because the list is not what you would guess. The four busiest strikers in the sample are Casey O'Neill at 7.89 a minute, Tom Aspinall at 7.63, Esteban Ribovics at 7.43 and Daniel Rodriguez at 7.19. One is a champion. One is ranked fourteenth, one fifteenth, one is unranked. Aspinall is the outlier in that group for the reason this whole piece is about: he lands 7.63 and absorbs only 3.62. The other three all absorb over 5.4.
Where the rule stops working
Here is the part that surprised us. The rule that says "get hit less and you will climb" describes who reaches the rankings very well. It describes who wins the belt much less well.
Of the ten champions in the sample, three absorb the fewest strikes of anyone in their division: Kayla Harrison at 1.1 a minute, Valentina Shevchenko at 2.0, and Makhachev at 1.42, second only to Yaroslav Amosov at welterweight. That fits.
But Justin Gaethje absorbs 6.83 strikes a minute - the most of any lightweight in our set, ranked or not - and holds the belt. Sean Strickland absorbs 4.53, fifth-most of 32 middleweights. Petr Yan absorbs 4.24, fifth-most of 25 bantamweights. Carlos Ulberg absorbs 4.03, in the bottom third of light heavyweight. Half the champions in this sample get hit more than the median fighter in their own division.
What they have instead is the differential. Gaethje's is negative, which makes him the genuine exception, but Strickland outlands his opponents by 1.45 a minute, Ulberg by 2.54, Volkanovski by 2.68, Aspinall by 4.01. The route to a ranking is to stop getting hit. The route from a ranking to a belt seems to be to hit back harder than you are hit, and to have the chin to keep doing it. Those are different skills, and the data is honest about the fact that the second one is rarer.
The takedown footnote
One more number from the same set deserves a mention, because it behaves like absorption rather than like volume. Sort the roster by takedowns per fight and the bottom three quarters are indistinguishable - win rates of .765, .753 and .773, ranked shares around 55-60%. The top quarter, fighters landing 2.28 or more takedowns per fight, jumps to a .839 win rate and a 75% ranked share, with the lowest average loss count of any quarter in the whole analysis.
That is partly the same fighters showing up twice - the wrestlers who absorb nothing because the fight is on the mat. But it is also a reminder that "strikes absorbed" is not a striking statistic. It is a control statistic. The fighters who are hit least are the fighters who decide where the fight happens, whether that decision is made with footwork or with a double leg.
How to use this
If you read fighter stats before a card, or before you pick two names in our simulator, the practical version is short.
Skip the landed-per-minute number, or at least read it last. On its own it tells you whether a fight will be busy, not who will win it. Go to absorbed-per-minute first. Anything under 2.5 is elite company - a group in which four out of five fighters are ranked. Anything over 4.5 is a warning, regardless of how much the fighter lands, because that group carries twice the losses.
Then check the takedown average, to find out why the absorption number is what it is. A fighter who absorbs 1.5 a minute and lands three takedowns a fight is a grappler who will try to make the standing exchanges short. A fighter who absorbs 1.5 and never shoots is something rarer and more dangerous, and there are about fourteen of them.
And if the fighter you are looking at has both a big landed number and a big absorbed number, you are looking at a brawler. Enjoy the fight. Just do not be surprised by the record.

Rankings and win-loss records are as held in our roster on 14 September 2026, updated weekly from the official UFC rankings; "champions" are the ten fighters our roster lists as undisputed champion, and interim champions are counted with the ranked contenders. Quartile cuts are on the 254 active fighters; correlations are on the 278 matched fighters with ten or more professional fights. All figures are medians unless stated as averages. The roster is a curated set of active and historically significant fighters, not every fighter under contract, so percentages describe this sample rather than the promotion as a whole.
